Isaiah 9:6 and Luke 2:11 tell us that Jesus would be called “Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.”
This Biblical narrative within both the Old and New Testaments is often so subtle to most readers that both the subject and direction of the scripture involved is completely overlooked or seen as irrelevant within context to the surrounding scripture.
Like Genesis 6 or many other Biblical passages, it is simply seen as another part of a potentially mythical story; fortunately for us, it is neither story nor myth. It is real, it is fact, it is true and it is a message from our Mighty God and Everlasting Father that He has given us a wonderful Counselor in the form of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ which we can take our problems too 24 hours a day with no waiting and walk-ins are always welcome.
In essence, this Biblical narrative is a directive and message of and from God to man emphatically stating that he would not leave man hopeless and alone. God would send His Holy Counselors initially in the form of the called out and set aside ones known as Prophets ( such as Isaiah) ultimately leading up to the promised one himself, our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
There would be many “Jesus Counselors” to follow down through the ages. There would be some with a prophetic message; some with a supportive message and still others such as myself with a little of both.
I am always amazed at how often God will turn what seems like simple supportive counseling into a full blown predictive, prophetic directive from God bringing added strength and support to the patient.
As one of my Psychology Mentors, Dr. Robin Wright used to say, “It’s not what we (as counselors) plan to say to the patient but rather what God gives us in the midst of His urging to say, that makes all the difference in patient support and recovery”.
