“…the first person with Asperger’s syndrome to host the show. Or at least the first person to admit it,”
Having written very little this past year on the subject of neurological disorders and mental health, I thought it both timely and prudent to do so at this time. Of course, every time I do so I realize I upset many of you unintentially; regardless of the purpose.
So, let me say from the onset of this article, it is intended to help and heal anyone which may be suffering from a neurological disorder such as epilepsy or functional autism and not just to point a finger at a very serious problem.
In reality, there is seldom any attention given to neurological disorders; epilepsy is mostly ignored. Except in states where “Sam’s Law” has become accepted and passed by state legislatures, it is almost seen as a nuisance by teachers and first responders. In fact most ambulances are only stocked with “Dilantin” (even though at least 50% of people with epilepsy are allergic to Dilantin and 20% more don’t know if they are or not)
All of this could be on the verge of changing.
But, like almost everything he does, Elon Musk doesn’t back down from anything, so when given the opportunity to host SNL, he didn’t hesitate about having Asperger’s Syndrome and stated he was the first person with such to host SNL or at least the first person to admit it.
Of course, epilepsy is not Asperger’s Syndrome but the very fact that it is one of several lesser known functional neurological disorders and admitted on national Television by the richest man on earth speaks volumes for those of us who exist daily with a functional neurological disorder and think nothing of it; maybe that’s why Elon made the statement that that he was: “…the first person with Asperger’s syndrome to host the show. “Or at least the first person to admit it,”; hopefully he won’t be the last.
